Project Spotlight: San Antonio Creek Restoration
Mr. Otero performed as the Superintendent/ SSHO on this design-build project for the restoration of San Antonio Creek to determine the water quantity and quality in the San Antonio Creek Valley. This project was a group effort as it involved many professionals including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Archaeologists, Biologists, and an Earthwork contractor.
The team was required to temporarily route 2,500-LF of San Antonio Creek (SAC) into a 36-inch culvert pipe via cofferdams. Four areas within SAC were excavated 8-ft in depth and 300-LF to allow 16-ton boulders to be strategically placed and begin the process of reducing the erosion of SAC. Three hill side slopes were excavated: one to repair earth erosion, one to provide soil for the third hill via removing soil 500-LF by 60-ft in depth and 35-ft in height. The third hill was an 85-ft vertical to be built at a 2:1 slope supporting Highway 1.
All hill slopes were completed with riprap bank protection including planting within riprap, erosion control via biodegradable waddles, and seeding up to 75% growth.
Prior to construction, Biologists successfully relocated three endangered species as well as other wildlife inhabitants. They also provided full time monitoring during earthwork operations to ensure no wild life were harmed in the process. Archaeologists provided full time monitoring during earthwork operations and recovered historical artifacts.
